Ask most people what "financial literacy" means, and they'll describe something narrow: budgeting, interest rates, reading a payslip. That's part of it, i agree, but crucial points are missed within this frameowork. Financial literacy is the ability to make good decisions under uncertainty, using money as the medium. basically it simply means having the right tools and judgement.

Here are the pillars: Earning, spending, saving and growing it.

1. Earning: Income vs. wealth

Many people think that they are secure simply beacuse they earn a lot: They are wrong. there are a lot of paid people in town living paycheck to paycheck, while people with modest incomes build real wealth during the same economic times. what really matters is what happens to the money after it arrives: is it converted into assets, or absorbed by lifestyle and expenses?

2. Spending: Price vs. cost

Price is what you pay today. Cost is an umbrella that is covering everything that purchase gives up : what is the opportunity being missed because of that price, what interests / debt debt are you using to buy it . Financially literate people run the second calculation instinctively.

3. Saving: Build a buffer before building wealth

Before investing makes sense, you need a cushion: can you absorb an economic shock (job loss, medical bill, a broken vehicle) without derailing everything. Skipping this step is one of the reasons investment plans collapse.

4. Growing: Put money to work

Idle cash loses value to inflation and devaluations every year, even if the monetory figure stays the same. You need to understand basic growth vehicles : savings instruments, government securities, equities, real assets, a business. with that understanding you need to match them to your actual timeline and risk tolerance, i beg of you not to get caught up with what's in fashion: 'osatengeka kugula ma plot or ma shares simply because its trending'.

Basically Financial literacy is an ongoing negotiation between what you want now and what you are building for later and the ones who win are the consistent ones.
